Our Cat Needs Closure

Me? I’m fine. Really.

But if there’s a karma god out there

watching over broken pets,

you better know what to say.

You broke our cat.

Every day, she walks around the house in a daze.

In want of an explanation

of why she’s no longer getting those

ear rubs, the kind that makes her purr.

Of why she’s no longer seeing two pairs

of legs under the dinner table.

Of why her sleep isn’t interrupted

by your stubby face buried on her belly.

She peers into my eyes with her head slightly tilted

waiting for an answer that I don’t have.

Maybe it’s time you tell her

what happened to us.

Not An Easy Question to Answer

Of Food and Love

It is not an easy replacement

of food over love.

While desserts are a delight to my tongue

(and so has your kisses),

And soup can warm my belly

(as your hand on it can do),

food will never pay me a compliment

or stare at me deliciously.

Falling in love with food is a one-sided affair…

which is what ours has become.

Sense of Entitlement

Why do you feel entitled to my love?

You, who never made an effort beyond what was convenient?

And now that I understand my worth,

I’m supposed to jump hoops for the scraps you throw at me?

Keep your love. And I’ll keep mine.

In Between

Did I need to be happier?

I certainly didn’t think so.

I honestly thought I couldn’t want

for anything more.

I went to where my feet took me;

Ate what my stomach told me;

Sang when my spirit moved me.

And then you came along

Like a stone on a paved path

Tripping my footing.

Now, I walk the line

between bliss and anguish

Never sure of where to stand.

Love is a Many-Flavored Thing

When I began this compilation of love poems, I thought to myself, love really is a many-flavored thing. And being Filipino, where food rivals religion in importance, I think that many can relate. When you are in-love for the very first time, love hits you as sweet, sometimes puke-inducingly sweet, the kind even sweet-toothed people shy away from. At times, it can be salty too, especially after a recent fight, where your mouth swallows not only buckets of tears, but also oodles of snot from dramatic bouts of crying only soap opera stars can rival. And then there’s sour–the green, bile-like taste left in your mouth after catching your beloved twisting his neck over the cutie in the next table. And when love is finally lost, it leaves an undeniably, no-matter-how-many-times-you-brush, bitter taste in your mouth. But hey, that’s love for you…throw in everything you’ve got and you get the most wonderful, interesting, vile, exotic, pungent, unforgettable flavors. And what is life without its flavors?

A Lost Love

Someday this watch

Will just be a thing

The band on my finger

Will just be a ring.

Someday your letters

Will lose their meaning

And our love song,

Easier to sing.

Someday this room

Will stop smelling like you

And I’ll forget

The things we used to do

Someday I won’t care

And believe that it’s true

A few days, a month

A year, or maybe two.

Someday I’ll be in our spot

And feel no pain

Maybe I’ll go out

To play in the rain

I will lie in the grass

Where you are lain

And write a poem

Of a love in vain.
